Team: Data Science & Research
WHOOP is an advanced health and fitness wearable, on a mission to unlock human
performance. WHOOP uses algorithms, rich data, and real-time machine learning
to empower its members through actionable biometrics, coaching, and a deeper
understanding of their bodies and lives. It is popular among Olympic athletes,
Navy SEALs, healthcare, and Fortune 500 CEOs.
As a Senior Data Scientist on the Algorithms team, you’ll mentor junior data
scientists and contribute to the technology at the core of WHOOP’s business.
Our team uses a wide variety of statistical and data science techniques to
interpret user behaviors, health, and physical activities, using time series
physiological data. Working in a brand new corporate headquarters, your
collaborators will include physiology experts, data scientists, and software
engineers. Your solutions will become member-facing product features that, out
of the gate, will meaningfully impact the health and fitness of huge numbers
of people.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop advanced machine learning models and algorithms for product features. These algorithms will often run on streaming or time-series sensor data
- Research, prototype, deploy and own time series algorithms and predictive models, such as classification, forecasting, anomaly detection, change-point detection and signal processing using both conventional and deep learning techniques
- Deploy the models and algorithms in production after testing and documenting the APIs
- Communicate results to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Identify and build new datasets to enhance the models and decision making
- Work closely with product managers and engineers to translate prototypes into production-ready code that maximizes member-value
- Reports to the Data Science - Algorithms, Technical Lead
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree, or a bachelor's degree with 3-5 years professional experience, in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- Demonstrable experience in full stack data science, including developing and deploying machine learning models in a production environment
- Experience exploring and training models with big datasets, using cloud technologies (Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Significant experience working with time series data is preferred. Prior experience with Python-based libraries for time series, such as tsfresh, sktime and Prophet, and deep learning architectures like InceptionTime and other 1D Convolutional Neural Networks will be a plus!
- Experience tuning machine learning classification models for better precision or recall
- Proficient in scientific Python (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, Pandas, XGBoost), SQL, and version control (GitHub)
- Ability to formulate hypotheses, draw conclusions and deliver results
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to present findings to stakeholders and communicate results to all colleagues
- Understanding of physiology or athletic experience is a huge plus
