We are seeking a hands-on manufacturing engineer to join our team developing
electric-powered aircraft. You are efficient in the office, on the shop floor,
and comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Your core responsibilities will focus on process development, manufacturing of
subsystem assemblies, and final integration of our aircraft. You will also
participate in DFM (Design for Manufacturability) assessments and projects,
including analyzing different manufacturing processes for cost and efficiency.
Just as importantly, you will help draft, enforce, and maintain manufacturing
standards and processes to ensure consistent production quality as the
organization grows.
You are well organized, with strong written skills, and are able to create and
maintain work instructions, in addition to excellent documentation of projects
and tasks. You have extensive experience with a wide variety of assembly and
manufacturing processes, automation of processes, cost analysis for
outsourcing of processes, and paperless workflow systems.
Within 3 months you will
- Get to know the team
- Shadow design engineers, technicians, and other manufacturing engineers
- Support manufacturing activities, both internal and outsourced
- Support drafting of processes related to manufacturability
- Support structural assemblies through aircraft integration.
- Learn how to use our CAD, PLM, and MES tools
Within 6 months you will
- Continue learning about the aircraft and subsystem assemblies
- Take ownership of new manufacturing projects
- Work with technicians, design engineers, and quality engineers to develop and/or improve manufacturing processes, tooling, procedures, quality control points, inspection plans, etc.
- Purchase and implement new manufacturing equipment along with fixture design to support prototype and production builds
- Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services
Within 12 months you will
- Reach high level of familiarity with the aircraft and its subsystems
- Continuously improve manufacturing processes
- Efficiently incorporate design changes into manufacturing plans and procedures
- Improve manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment
- Support tooling development
- Define equipment qualification processes
- Work with cross-functional teams (Design, Quality, and Production) to assess manufacturability of parts and systems, bringing prototypes through to full scale production
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience as a manufacturing engineer in a production environment, preferably in a high-volume manufacturing operation and/or aerospace
- Proficient with CAD software (NX or CATIA preferred)
- Proficient, safe, and knowledgeable use of hand and shop tools
- Experience working with cross-functional teams to improve the manufacturability of a product (Design for Manufacturing) while controlling cost and weight
- Experience laying out and integrating aircraft system installations, with consideration for manufacturing, certification, and maintenance
- Experience in development and integration of automated manufacturing processes to bring prototypes to high volume production
- Comfortable creating new solutions to problems, working in a dynamic environment, and with members of cross-functional teams
- Ability to work hands-on with production, quality, and design engineering teams to create Work Instructions, evaluate PFMEA’s (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), and develop new processes to improve yield and reliability
- Strong verbal and documentation skills with respect to project and task tracking
- Familiar with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)
- Must be able to easily access our shop in Mountain View, CA, and be open to eventual relocation to our final production facility
Desired
- Proficient with drafting standards/GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018 preferred); Has ability to interpret, correct, and create engineering drawings
- Experience working on certified aircraft and in a regulated environment (e.g. AS9100, FAA Certification, or similar)
- Proficient in the fundamentals of industrial engineering, including capacity models, technical writing, time studies, and labor cost forecasting
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six-Sigma principles
- Familiarity with engineering configuration management tools such as Teamcenter and JIRA
- Ability to drive continuous improvement & optimization efforts to reduce production costs, improve yield, quality, reliability, and performance
- Experience with research and installation of new and existing equipment
- Knowledge of safety standards/guidelines pertinent to high voltage assemblies and experience implementing them
