Staff Electrical Engineer at Pattern Bioscience | Powderkeg

Location: Austin, TX

Employment Type: Full-time

Team: Hardware Engineering

At Pattern Bioscience, we’re tackling antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. Our technology rapidly identifies bacterial infections and predicts the most effective antibiotics to treat the infection. We’re building direct-from-specimen phenotypic rapid ID/AST assays using live cells on our proprietary instrument and consumable platform.

We are looking for a teammate, a problem solver, someone who is persistent, passionate, and loves to see projects to completion. As the Staff Electrical Engineer, you will join our Instrument team and bring your deep experience in electrical engineering to support and lead efforts as we transition our diagnostic device from development to production. You will lead electrical design from definition through validation and work with other subject matter experts to bring a first of its kind medical diagnostic device to market.

In addition to your technical contributions, as a senior member of the team, you will provide mentorship and project leadership on a complex development project, from conception to design transfer. This includes providing leadership in the effort to transition our medical diagnostic instrument from development to production and through clinical trials

This position offers you the opportunity to ** join a mission-driven, entrepreneurial company that values openness and collaboration, where you can have ownership and make an impact on lifesaving technology, innovation, and your fellow teammates.**

How You Will Contribute

  • Lead electrical development activities including system architecture development, detailed design and analysis, hardware design reviews, FMEAs, circuit board bring up, verification testing, system integration, and user requirement validation
  • Lead design verification activities for electrical systems including development of fixtures, creation of procedures and methods, and implementation of test plans
  • Manage multiple technical projects including reporting, risk assessment, and presentation to company leadership
  • Perform failure mode analysis, root cause diagnosis, and system level problem solving
  • Collaborate with principal technologists and other project leads to resolve technical problems within and beyond the instrument team.
  • Support system integration readiness for clinical trials (instrument, software, consumables, and assay) including verification and validation studies
  • Support transfer of instrument to contract manufacturing and develop test fixtures to aid PCBA fabrication and box build assemblies
  • Lead the adoption of best practices and methods to improve engineering processes
  • Mentor and provide strong technical leadership to team members
