Assay Research Scientist II at Pattern Bioscience | Powderkeg

Location: Austin, TX

Employment Type: Full-time

Team: Assay Research

At Pattern Bioscience, we’re tackling antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. Our technology rapidly identifies bacterial infections and predicts the most effective antibiotics to treat the infection. We’re building direct-from-specimen phenotypic rapid ID/AST assays using live cells on our proprietary instrument and consumable platform.

We are searching for a creative, data-driven, analytically minded Scientist II to join our Assay Research team. This team solves a wide variety of problems, including developing our novel assay technology, developing innovative sample prep solutions for different sample types, and working with internal and external collaborators to perform studies using Pattern’s system. You will work with other scientists and associate scientists from a diverse set of fields as well as with hardware engineers and our clinical team.

How You Will Contribute

  • Ideate, plan, execute, and analyze experiments in a BSL-2 lab in support of solving challenging problems related to the development of an in vitro diagnostic biochemical assay for the identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing (ID/AST) of bacteria
  • Manage and lead a small (1-2) team of direct reports composed of associate scientists and research associates: providing guidance for experimental design and corresponding task allocation
  • Discover or develop new techniques that increase scientific throughput and insights for the whole team
  • Use data and analysis to support scientific decisions and to communicate to adjacent teams
  • Collaborate with other multi-disciplinary teams (including Manufacturing, Clinical, Chemistry, and Engineering)

We'd Love to Hear From You If You

  • Can plan, execute, and analyze complex experiments
  • Tell cohesive scientific stories through data and analysis
  • Demonstrate the pursuit of excellence and expertise in your domain
  • Embrace problems outside of your knowledge base
  • Engage in collaborative and creative problem-solving

Desired Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Biomaterials, or related sciences; or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years postdoctoral research or industry experience
  • Experience with analytical and purification techniques and biochemical reactions
  • Competency in analytical software (R, JMP, Python, etc.)
  • A demonstrated track record of solving complex problems

Instead of a cover letter, we invite you to answer our application questions. They will allow you to elaborate on the types of experiences we're seeking for this role. The questions also help us understand more of your motivations as a scientist. We promise, we do read every response carefully.
