At CB Insights we build products that help clients make sense of the future and drive their businesses forward using data. Our system retrieves large amounts of data in real time on the private market, and then extracts knowledge and insights from that data. We present those analytics through a dynamic user interface which enables our clients to make strategic business decisions around corporate strategy, innovation, investments, etc. We are hiring for a backend engineer to help drive our business forward.

The Role You’ll Play

Here at CB Insights, our backend software engineers build robust services and scalable data processing jobs. This Backend role is on a team that focuses on the search functionality of our platform.

About the team:

This team is one of the most internally collaborative team’s we have at CBI! We get direct feedback from our users while helping drive our core business. Working in the CBI engineering department is unique. Since we are a smaller team without a lot of bureaucracy, we are able to really push the envelope without going through a lot of red tape. It is also a great team to learn from others and grow in your career, as well as a chance to enact any ideas you may bring to the table. We have frequent team lunches and happy hours and we’re a very open and friendly group.

Your Main Tasks:

  • Develop features, improve search workflow and performance on a small Agile team.
  • Mentor other engineers in Elasticsearch best practices.
  • Consistently and frequently deliver solutions that are well-engineered, maintainable and tested within the agreed upon time frame.
  • Participate in code reviews and sprint planning, help identify opportunities, work through challenges and share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Collaborate with the product team to understand business requirements.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • 3+ years professional experience in Go, Python, and/or JavaScript
  • Experience with Elasticsearch or similar search engines
  • Familiarity with search relevancy techniques to tune search results
  • Relational database proficiency (e.g. MySQL, Aurora, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
  • Proficiency developing in a Mac/Linux environment
  • An interest in helping out across the stack as needed
  • BS in Computer Science or similar work experience; advanced degrees also acceptable ;-)

Please note this is a US-based role.

In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for a bonus opportunity.

A little bit about our pay practices: Typically, we will hire at our Hiring Target, but actual starting pay may be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, market rate, the qualified pool of candidates, internal compensation, candidate experience, and budgetary constraints.
