About the Role:

The role is responsible for monitoring the self-driving system, collecting data and taking notes on system performance, and troubleshooting both software and hardware issues to provide useful feedback to Engineering to accelerate our tech progress. AV Software Operators work in the right seat next to our safety driver for 8+ hours a day. Cross country/state travel is sometimes required with stays lasting a few days to a few weeks. The AV Software Operator must be in constant communication with their assigned Safety Driver, describing system performance and annotating real-world situations. When not in the truck, AV Software Operators are responsible for continuous improvement of themselves and contributing to any goals that Operations and Embark put into place.

Day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Help ensure safe testing as the co-pilot: inform the Safety Driver in real-time of expected behaviors of the system
  • Run a variety of development & release tests on the truck’s AV system
  • Communicate with Safety Drivers about vehicle function; calling out any anomalies or irregular behavior to ensure safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Log real-time feedback regarding autonomy and platform performance during testing, with the end goal to be delivered to engineers for system improvements.
  • Provide concise written and oral feedback and daily reports, helping to identify areas of focus to maximize the efficacy of the teams' work.
  • Troubleshoot, fix, and document basic hardware and software issues that occur during truck operation.
  • Operate AV System on predetermined and/or new geographical routes, and in a variety of weather/environmental conditions.
  • Assists the driver in guiding physical movements of trucks to docks or trailers as a standard operating practice.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of how our self-driving technology works. Understand daily software and operational changes & updates.

Abilities and Requirements:

  • Must be a safety-minded individual; safety is our highest priority!
  • Ability to identify, diagnose, troubleshoot, and conduct repairs of technical issues with the support of our operations & engineering teams.
  • Ability to multitask while maintaining focus and great attention to detail for long periods of time while riding along in a moving semi-truck or while providing remote support.
  • Must be self-motivated and demonstrate good judgment, in fast-paced, high-stress, and changing environments.
  • Ability to respond quickly to changing and high-pressure environments or events.
  • Ability to communicate and escalate issues clearly and concisely.
  • Superb interpersonal skills are a must - partner with cross-functional teams and be a team player.
  • Willing to travel when needed for the mission, up to 50% of the time, and work on a rotating schedule that includes nights and weekends.A passion for the autonomous vehicle & trucking industry.
  • Proficiency with a laptop computer, G-Suite apps, and other technologies.
  • Must be able to type at least 40 adjusted words per minute comfortable riding as a co-pilot in our autonomous semi-truck for a minimum of 8hrs a day.
  • Able to lift, carry, or push a minimum of 50lbs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior AV Operations, technology, or automotive experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Interest and aptitude for technology tools - apps, gaming, design tools, etc.
