We are looking to hire an experienced leader to build an SRE team focused on ensuring the reliability of our production systems. The SRE lead will be expected to grow a high-performing team with a wide impact across our engineering organization. This team will be tasked with building software and processes that promote high availability of our critical services and fostering a culture of observability and reliability throughout engineering. From testing and monitoring standards, to incident detection, response and post-mortem review, the SRE team will have a hand in defining every aspect of how Embark iterates on its systems to consistently improve system reliability.

Role Responsibilities

• Build a high-performing SRE team to scale Embark through a period of rapid growth and ensure that an increasing number of production systems maintain high standards of reliability as we grow.
• Work closely with all engineering teams across Embark to ensure that every team shipping software is architecting their applications in a way that promotes reliability.
• Foster a team culture that is collaborative, inclusive and high-performing
• Be a hands-on technical contributor. As the leader of a new team, you should feel comfortable being a technical contributor and standing up new systems as well as managing a small team.

Team Responsibilities

• Observability Platform: Setting the standards for how we instrument critical applications at Embark. Building and maintaining a framework that enables us to spin up new applications with monitoring and alerting services integrated from day 1.
• Production Monitoring: Implementing and maintaining monitoring of our production systems to ensure rapid incident detection and response. Instrumenting cloud services and applications as well as on-premises systems to make sure no issue is left unnoticed by our team.
• Incident Response: Set the standards for how our engineering teams should respond to incidents. Managing on-call rotations, advocating for detailed system instrumentation and runbooks, and building software to be able to revert deployments quickly.

Desired Experience

• Demonstrated experience leading a high-performing team. You have previously managed a small team focused on site reliability, infrastructure, or production engineering. You should be comfortable hiring, setting objectives, managing execution and growing a team.
• 5+ years of experience in software, infrastructure, site reliability, or production engineering
• Experience running critical systems at scale with an understanding of a wide range of technologies from low-level systems through the application stack
• Proven track record of cross-collaboration, and influencing change across an organization
• Experience with observability platforms covering logging, metrics and alerting
• Strong communication skills, the ability to advise leadership at the executive level and successfully advocate for initiatives
