Technology roles appear to be “pandemic-proof.”

As companies pivoted business models and accelerated cloud strategies in 2020 due to COVID-19, the demand for qualified software developers and engineers increased.

The 2020 Worldwide Developer Population and Demographic Study stated that the global developer population continued to grow by 500,000 last year, reaching a total of 24.5 million.

A few examples of upcoming growth: Over the next five years, Apple will be investing more than $430 billion in the U.S., with plans to create over 20,000 new jobs across the country. Toyota announced they will boost hiring of software engineers to 50% of all their new technical hires, showing how important software development skills are to carmakers right now.

Forbes is actually predicting a shortage of software engineers.
