How do we define the Mighty Middle, when it comes to tech industries?

According to Christian Beck, co-founder and executive design partner at Innovatemap, and Clay Gordon, managing partner at Stout Street Capital, the Mighty Middle is the network of emerging tech hubs between the coasts.

Or as moderator Rich Maloy put it during Clay and Christian’s Unvalley panel, “The Mighty Middle is anywhere outside the madness of New York, San Francisco, or Boston.”

“Mighty Middle companies are developing their own identities now, which is a shift from five years ago,” Christian says. “The industry no longer views these companies with a kind of ‘Aw, shucks, those Midwestern folks like technology too’ attitude. The companies and the communities are learning to stand on their own.”

Being helpful and collaborative is a must. Clay’s firm, Stout Street Capital, has to be collaborative in order to succeed. “Having a ‘give first’ mentality is critical,” Clay says. “Getting along and being helpful is really the only way to do business in the collaborative ecosystem in the Mighty Middle. Companies can’t exit without the help of others.”
