Podcasts are a popular way to learn about tech industry news, best practices, and case studies from the fastest growing tech companies.

Listening to business podcasts has countless benefits. Not only is it an effective way to gain knowledge on-the-go, but it’s also a great way to stay up-to-date on the latest trends for building a great software company.

What makes a good business podcast?

Great podcasts are both informative and entertaining. Podcast hosts are typically great interviewers and are able to break down complex topics into actionable takeaways. Guests on the show are typically experts in their field, and they’re able to share their unique perspectives and learnings. Of course, high-quality audio production also makes for a great listening experience.

While there are many benefits to listening to business podcasts, it’s important to choose the right one that matches your interests and career goals.

From HBR’s IdeaCast to How I Built This, here are some of the favorite business podcasts of executives at fast growing tech companies—and why they keep listening.

The All-In Podcast

The All-In Podcast would have to be my favorite business podcast. They’ve intentionally taken a unique approach to building an audience and podcasting (zero ads), which leads to them having a pretty open and honest conversation around current events in the tech and startup world.

Drew Beechler, CEO at Holder

My favorite podcast is All-In. The four hosts are wicked smart and are pragmatic venture capitalists. I had the pleasure to work directly with Chamath Palihapitiya during the dot.com era, and it has been great to see how he has grown over the years.

Jim Kinney, President & CEO at Kinney Group

Finding Mastery

Finding Mastery with Dr. Michael Gervais, because that to me is what leadership is all about, helping others find their maximum potential (mastery) self-included. Each episode features inspiring stories from the world’s best athletes, brilliant business minds, musicians, and artists changing our perspectives on what’s possible within ourselves. It helps listeners connect to their potential and pursue their very best self.

Dream Big with Bob Goff and Friends

I love the way Bob Goff inspires me and others to live with an abundant mindset. So often in business and life, it is easy to let fear drive decision making. The Dream Big podcast helps me keep a hope-filled outlook – focused on opportunities for growth.

Your First Million by Arlan Hamilton and Dare to Lead by Brené Brown

One of my favorite business podcasts is Your First Million by Arlan Hamilton. I think the interviews are really engaging and vulnerable, and it’s so helpful to learn from entrepreneurs with a variety of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. I appreciate that the show isn’t always a guest interview—sometimes Arlan just turns on the mic and hits record, and those episodes are great. I always learn something new when I listen to Arlan’s podcast.

Another favorite of mine is Dare to Lead by Brené Brown. I so appreciate the vulnerability in the interviews and the variety of perspectives shared on the show. I always come away with a new idea and a sense of steadiness in my own work and leadership after listening to Dare to Lead.

Meg Yothment, Head of Community Operations at Powderkeg

Get IN.

I may be biased… but Get IN. is my favorite business podcast. Every week we are uncovering the untold stories in the lives of leaders across the Hoosier state. These leaders are making a huge impact in our local community and their stories are not only inspiring but also actionable. If you want to plug in to the untapped potential in Indiana I strongly recommend Get IN. Plus the hosts are pretty cool if I say so myself.

Nate Spangle, Head of Community at Powderkeg

Freakonomics

The Freakonomics podcast is one of my favorite business podcasts because I find it fascinating and useful to learn how other industries operate. Economist Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen Dubner host the podcast, and each episode covers a different topic in business or economics.

I like that the hosts are very down-to-earth and approach complex topics in a way that is easy to understand. I also appreciate that they often interview experts in various fields, which gives me a broader understanding of how different industries work. Overall, the Freakonomics podcast is a great resource for anyone interested in business and economics.

How I Built This

What makes How I Built This so great is that he doesn’t just ask his guests questions—he digs deep into their successes and struggles to better understand how these companies could thrive despite the odds.

I particularly love hearing different founders’ stories because each journey has its own unique challenges and milestones—How I Built This With Guy Raz captures those inspiring stories for us all to learn from and be motivated by!

Every episode brings with it new insights, inspirations, perspectives, and lessons, from small start-ups to big companies. In addition, Guy Raz does such an amazing job at getting his guests to open up about their personal histories, which really helps me identify more with them as people rather than just business owners leading major corporations in Silicon Valley. This should definitely be on your “must-listen” list, as it’s richly personal, surprisingly technical, yet very digestible.

Maria Harutyunyan, Co-Founder, Loopex Digital

I love NPR’s How I Built This because it tells the stories behind some of the world’s best-known companies. It covers a wide range of industries, from retail to technology, and provides insights into the challenges and successes of building a business.

The Masters of Scale

The business podcast that I love and use often is the Masters of Scale podcast. Hosted by Reid Hoffman, one of the most influential Silicon Valley investors, this show offers a unique perspective on how tech leaders can develop successful businesses from scratch. Each episode takes an in-depth look at start-up stories and features discussions with industry professionals about the important lessons they have learned along their entrepreneurial journey.

Additionally, Masters of Scale stands out from other business podcasts with its unique production style. Rather than a traditional interview format, the show combines narrative storytelling and interviews to provide an entertaining yet thought-provoking look at the success stories of tech leaders. This helps make the podcast more engaging and adds a fresh perspective on what successful entrepreneurs can learn from the experiences of their peers.

Crypto 101

Crypto 101 is an excellent podcast to tune in to learn the basics of investing in crypto and to understand the nuances of the business. The podcast provides in-depth interviews with notable figures in the industry, as well as comprehensive beginner’s guides on a variety of topics such as blockchain, cold storage, and much more.

Additionally, the podcast is hosted by two gentlemen by the names of Bryce Paul and Aaron Malone, two of the most respected figures in the crypto industry, so the insight is top-notch.

These hosts also co-authored Crypto Revolution, another fantastic source of crypto knowledge, so I find their insight to be extremely valuable and implement them into my own investing strategies.

Techcess

I’m a big fan of the podcast Techcess because it’s doing exactly what a good podcast should—offering hugely valuable advice for any business that wants to “get better” at using IT in their business.

Each week, it offers really simple ways you can improve your efficiencies and operational processes to see immediate improvements. And the host of the podcast, Mark Riddell, is willingly giving away the advice you’d easily pay an IT consultant thousands for! Not to mention, some episodes feature a downloadable resource like a guide which is also free and doesn’t even require an email address.

Startups for the Rest of Us

The reason my favorite podcast is Startups for the Rest of Us is that Rob is a successful entrepreneur who has built and sold numerous successful SaaS companies and has invested in hundreds, so the advice he gives is unfiltered tips on what worked in his startups that you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, he is gaining a lot of experience from the hundreds of startups he has invested in. Highly recommended!
